MRSA bug found in eleven Irish nursing homes

Eleven private nursing homes in the midwest of Ireland and five homes in the north east which were inspected between January and June have revealed that 35 cases of the potentially fatal MRSA bug were discovered. The figures were released under the Irish Freedom of Information Act.

The reports omit to state how the patients contracted the antibiotic resistant superbug. Many of the affected patients could have had the bug when they were admitted especially if they had recently been discharged from a hospital.

The nursing homes were in general found to be well run.
