Companies carrying out public functions escape FoI

Companies that provide public services will not be brought within the Freedom of Information Act, the government said yesterday. The Campaign for Freedom of Information said the decision was very disappointing given the growing role the private sector had in providing public services.

The justice ministry has bowed to the arguments of employers' organisations that meeting FOI requests would add to the costs of contracts.
