ICO launches new model publication scheme. Does anyone know what a publication scheme is?

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has issued a new model publication scheme to help public authorities disclose official information and comply with the Freedom of Information Act.

Under the Act public authorities are obliged to adopt a publication scheme so that members of the public can easily identify the type of information that will be routinely disclosed. The ICO’s model publication scheme should be adopted by any authority and user friendly sector specific guidance is also now available to help authorities implement the scheme.

Graham Smith, Deputy Commissioner at the ICO, said: “Our approach to publication schemes is pragmatic and based on common sense. I encourage public authorities to adopt the model scheme as it will help members of the public know the type of information that will be routinely available and help authorities comply with the Freedom of Information Act. Adopting the model scheme will also minimise administration for public bodies and maximise public benefit. The Act continues to bring great benefits to public life and break down the culture of secrecy.”
