Australian police escape speeding fines

Queensland police have suffered the ultimate embarrassment by failing to catch themselves speeding, reports Australia's Courier-Mail.

Two leadfoot police officers have escaped fines and a total of seven demerit points from speeding offences – one 33km/h over the limit – because of administration blunders that left the department with a $2500 bill.

Police photographic infringement notices – obtained by The Courier-Mail under Freedom of Information laws – reveal the drivers of two unmarked cars issued tickets in the past 18 months were never found.

The failure meant the fines were instead paid for by the department, at the more expensive commercial rate.
