Free personal care delays

Delays faced by pensioners who require Scotland's free personal care package vary from five days to nearly 120 days across the country.

In one council area, pensioners wait for two months for an assessment to discover if they qualify for the support, and then a further three weeks to receive the assistance. However, other authorities can deliver the care within days. The postcode lottery experienced by some of Scotland's most vulnerable elderly has been exposed by the health committee of the Scottish Parliament. Its findings were published yesterday after it pursued councils for details under freedom of information legislation.
