Yorkshire: police officers with criminal convictions revealed under FOI

Over 40 police officers serving in forces throughout Yorkshire have criminal records or have been cautioned. The discovery that 10 officers from West Yorkshire have been convicted for assault triggered calls for a more accountable and open system for disciplining those who break the law.

The disclosures – made under the Freedom of Information Act – showed that of the four Yorkshire forces, South Yorkshire apparently has the highest number of serving officers with criminal records – 20 have been convicted or cautioned since 1999. Four were convicted or cautioned for drink-driving, one for assault and another for dangerous driving. Of the others, seven were convicted or cautioned for speeding and four for driving without due care and attention.
