Edinburgh's council tax scandal

Over £80 million is owed in unpaid council tax in Edinburgh. Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show £83m of council tax is still outstanding, some of it dating back to 1996. £15.7m is still outstanding in unpaid council tax from the last financial year.

A spokesman for Citizens Advice Scotland called for an immediate overhaul in the council tax collection system. Audit Scotland has revealed how Edinburgh has the fourth worst collection rate for council tax in Scotland - ahead of only Dundee, Glasgow and West Dunbartonshire Councils - at 90 per cent.
