History could become history

Documents released under freedom of information legislation have revealed widespread opposition to comments made by Peter Peacock, the education minister, last year.

Mr Peacock suggested that history could lose its place as a distinct subject in Scottish schools. According to Scotland on Sunday, his comments have generated a "furious reaction" from parents, pupils and teachers throughout Scotland.

Mr Peacock had said that history might not remain a stand-alone subject in the first two years of secondary school, and could instead be taught alongside modern studies and geography
