Court delays in Scotland cost taxpayers over £80,000 a year

Delays to cases at Edinburgh Sheriff Court are costing taxpayers more than £80,000 a year. Almost half the summary trials or trial hearings failed to go ahead on their scheduled dates last year, costing around £40 for every five minutes of court time taken up.

The statistics were obtained using Freedom Of Information laws and this is the first time such reports have been collated by the Scottish Court Service.

Trial delays bill tops £80,000 (The Scotsman, 2 March 2006)
